What Is Thousand Cankers Disease?

Thousand Cankers Disease (TCD) is a serious condition that affects black walnut trees (Juglans nigra). It is caused by the combined activity of a fungus (Geosmithia morbida) and the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis). As beetles tunnel under the bark, they introduce the fungus, leading to the formation of numerous small cankers that gradually girdle branches and stems — eventually killing the tree.
